The human body is an amazing creation, with the ability to manage many of it's own resources like the production of anti oxidants. Glutathione is one example of this and while it is present in some of the healthier food choices, we do make it ourselves.
Glutathione is the product of three amino acids and it's present in every cell in our body. Given its value to the immune system through its ability to create lymphocytes- cells which valiantly battle different diseases, it's good to know that we have it everywhere.
Our bodies can use food to manufacture the amino acids needed to create glutathione as well as building it from the acids found in cells. There are a number of foods that can help us create glutathione. Watermelon and asparagus are two of these, as are most fresh vegetables, fruits, and fresh meat. Whey protein is also beneficial. For most, a healthy diet will enable the production of all of the glutathione needed. Taking glutathione supplements has been found to not really be that helpful. It seems that oral supplementation of glutathione is not readily absorbed by our systems. That's too bad since our ability to product glutathione falls off when we leave our twenties.
As an antioxidant, glutathione helps our body fix the damage created by a host of problems ranging from stress and a poor diet to radiation treatments, infection and burns. By neutralizing free radicals which damage our bodies at cellular level, antioxidants are critically important to our health. The liver plays an important part in this drama not only because it cleans pollutants and foreign chemicals from our system, it is also where much of the glutathione is actually produced.
What is glutathione good for? Glutathione is good for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's Disease, cataracts, cancer and high blood pressure. It's been connected to infertility in men. It can help repair cell damage caused by radiation and chemotherapy - but according to many studies there is reason to expect that it won't react the same with every person. Lots of research is still being done but there have been some very positive testimonials from people who have increased their glutathione levels.
Meet Larry. For fifteen years Larry suffered from a condition that created extended periods of total fatigue. In his words " I completely ran out of gas." According to the five doctors on the team treating Larry, his immune system was severely compromised and he suffered from anemia and iron deficiency. The many supplements and medications he was taking were not helpful.
Larry started to take a Glutathione precursor designed to help his body produce more of this natural anti oxidant around the middle of December and after only three days, while he said he was tired after doing the Christmas decorations, it was just a normal level of tiredness. He woke up the next day feeling energetic and for the next week while he waited for his usual levels of exhaustion to kick in - they didn't. After only being able to really function normally for about an hour a day, Larry was soon able to start leading a normal life.
Within a few weeks, while finally being able to work normal hours Larry was thrilled to discover that his sense of mental alertness returned as well. After spending so much time feeling too tired to think straight, Larry's newly returned mental clarity had a huge impact on this life. He was also able to be rid of a long term discomfort that affected his hands. Energy, mental clarity, the dexterity in your hands - what an amazing way to get your life back.
Kicking his 78 different supplements a day habit was perhaps the final blue ribbon benefit for Larry, whose improved health and energy levels were apparent to everyone, including his brother the physician. He was seriously impressed with the difference that higher levels of glutathione made.
